The first time he felt it was after the dance, he didn't know what it was, but he knew it was because of her.

As he stood in the middle of the crowd, his breath was taken from him by a pair of green eyes and a blinding smile. The rest of the night was a blur, but he would not, could not, forget what he felt when their eyes met that night.

He did not recognize what that emotion was until he realized he would never see her again.

He loved her.

As the world burned around him, as the sky turned to ash, and as the air was filled with the scent of death, he could only feel cold.

He felt like he was drowning.

Drowning in the memories of her.

It was not long after that night when she was announced dead.

Guilt tore him apart that night and many nights after. He blamed himself for not being good enough, for not realizing how she felt earlier.

His memories of the fall played in his mind on repeat. Insomnia plagued him. The little sleep he did get was no escape from the guilt fueled terrors that haunted him during the day.

He loved her, and now she is gone.
