I thought that it was ridiculous that there was no song-fic for this song in this category! So, here it is! I own nothing, by the way.
Well, I heard he needed some help on the farm
Somebody with a truck and two strong arms
Not scared of dirt, and willin' to work
'Till the sun goes down
Hugh, nineteen, walked up the familiar path to Lucky Farm. Jack had been getting older, and Celia, with a house to clean and two kids at home, certianly couldn't help much. So, the young fitness buff decided to help out the old man.
So I pulled up and said, "I'm your man.
"I can start right now." and we shook hands
He said "The fence needs fixin'
"The peaches need pickin'
"And the cows need bringin' round."
"I'd be happy to help you out, Jack." Hugh said. The farmer smiled and shook the boy's hand.
"Thanks, Hugh. I really appreciate it. The pasture fence needs to be fixed, or Ned'll run away again. There are some crops that I can't pick anymore, so you need to help with that, too. And the cows got loose again, and if you don't bring them in before the storm, they'll get sick.
I was haulin' hay
I was feedin' the hogs
An' that summer sun
Had me sweatin' like a dog
So I'd cool off in the creek
An' it was back to work
In that daggone heat
I was cussin' out loud
Thinkin' 'bout quitin'
Lookin' back now, I'm sure glad
I didn't
'Cuz just when I thought it couldn't get any hotter,
I caught a glimpse of the farmer's daughter
"Shit!" Hugh swore as one of Jack's many chickens pecked his finger. "Goddammit! You stupid-ass chicken! Haven't you ever heard 'Don't bite the hand that feeds you'? Shit!" He sighed and leaned against the outer wall of the chicken coop. "Maybe I should quit."
"Who's that, Papa?"
Hugh swirled around-and stopped breathing.
"It's Hugh. You remember him, right? He decided to help out."
Yup, it was Thalia, Jack and Celia's oldest daughter. She had been gone for almost three months-had she always been that attractive?
She turned towards Hugh and smiled. "I almost didn't recognize him. It's nice to see you again, Hugh!"
Maybe he wouldn't quit, after all.
