Summary An alternate ending to Deathly Hallows. Random short fic.
Harry and Voldemort stood, circling each other, as the survivors of the battle looked on. Harry had already told them not to do anything to help him. This was his fight and no one else's. His breath was ragged and uneven, his chest rising and falling as he paced sideways. The moment was nearing; they both knew it. Harry was numbly conscious of what he was saying, goading Riddle, getting a strange sense of satisfaction from seeing those red eyes flash dangerously.
Out of the corner of his eye, Harry could see clearly the faces of certain people amongst the blur of the gathered crowd: Ron…Hermione…and Ginny. His heart tightened and his stomach lurched as he saw Ginny's tear-stained face. What he wouldn't give to run up to her and embrace her; to hold on to her tightly and never let go; her flowery scent the only thing he would breathe in as he held onto her.
Harry's feet were moving mechanically now, his eyes appearing as though they were fixed on Voldemort, but in reality they were glazed, all his mind power focused on Ginny, and not the duty that he still had to fulfil.
Perhaps Voldemort noticed Harry's inattention. Or maybe it was just fate, as at that precise moment, wand aimed at Harry's heart, he acted:
"AVADA KEDAVRA!"
By the time Harry had refocused on his adversary, his last ditch "Expelliarmus!" was far too late. The jet of green light from Voldemort's wand hit Harry squarely in the chest, just above his heart. He was blasted backwards, landing mere inches from the feet of Ron, Hermione and Ginny.
Screams shattered the air as the surrounding crowd saw the face of their finally defeated Harry Potter their last hope against the Dark Lord.
Voldemort was laughing, and his Death Eaters fired sparks from their wands into the air, whooping and cheering.
Ginny sank to the ground, clutching her face in her hands. She slowly dragged herself over to Harry's still body, trying to tell herself that it was a mistake; it had to be a mistake. He couldn't be dead. He just couldn't! She flung herself onto his body, sobbing furiously, oblivious to the world around her.
Suddenly, Ginny was thrown backwards from Harry and she landed hard on her back. Completely winded, she managed to sit up, only to see Voldemort levitating Harry's body high above the heads of the grieving crowd, revelling in the destruction of 'The Boy Who Lived'.
Out of the corner of her eye, Ginny could make out shapes running towards her, but she neither knew nor cared who they were. She stood up, numb to the pain her body was feeling, but the raw pain she felt in her heart coursed through her veins. Her eyes narrowed and flashed dangerously as she glared at Voldemort.
None of the Death Eaters, or even Voldemort himself, noticed the young redheaded girl raise her wand and aim it at Voldemort. None of them saw her shove her family and friends out of her way; heard her shout:
"AVADA KEDAVRA!"
Voldemort never saw it coming. His body flew into the group of cheering Death Eaters, as the spell on Harry's body lifted and he fell to the ground.
Ginny Weasley was the wizarding world's unexpected hero.
Her love for Harry allowed her to really mean what she did; really mean to kill Lord Voldemort.
