"Tommy!"
Thomas heard Newt calling him, and he turned around to find the blonde standing by the edge of the Deadheads. "Come here," Newt called, "I need to talk to you."
Thomas headed over to Newt. In the last few days, they'd become really close. Last night, they'd even cuddled together, falling asleep like that. Minho had found them the next morning, and of course, he wasn't letting the two hear the end of it. Or anyone else, for that matter.
Thomas reached Newt and smiled at him. "What's up?"
"Follow me, I have to tell you something." Thomas didn't argue and he followed Newt into the woods, where hopefully no one else would hear their conversation. "Now, Tommy. Give me your hands."
Without hesitation, Thomas obliged and Newt squeezed them. Concern suddenly overwhelmed Thomas. He had no idea what was wrong. The older boy was sure acting like Thomas wouldn't take this very well. "Thomas...listen, you're new here. Alby and I told everyone else to keep this from you, just because I knew you wouldn't take it well. I don't want you to get any ideas from this."
"Newt, just tell me," Thomas said gently, giving Newt's hands a reassuring squeeze.
Newt took a deep breath. "Okay, here goes." He pulled Thomas closer. "I gave up once, Tommy. I gave up trying to escape. Being a Runner, I'd-"
"Wait," Thomas said. "Newt, you were a Runner?"
Newt nodded. "Yeah, before I hurt my leg."
Thomas nodded. "Running from the Grievers," he remembered.
Tears filled Newt's eyes and Thomas' heart broke. A tear streaked Newt's face and he shook his head. "No, Tommy," he said, "I lied."
Thomas was dumbfounded. "Why?"
"I tried to kill myself, Tommy," Newt said. Thomas froze in pure horror. "I gave up, I gave up on myself, everyone I cared about! And I jumped off the bloody Maze wall."
Thomas' jaw dropped and he felt tears streaming down his face. "I'm never letting you out of my sight again," he sobbed, and took Newt's face in his hands and smashed their lips together. Newt's eyes widened and then they closed, his arms wrapping around Thomas' waist. They kissed for a long time before they broke apart, both boys gasping for breath.
"Wow, Tommy," Newt gasped, resting his head on Thomas' chest as the younger boy held him tight. "Wow."
"I love you, Newt," Thomas confessed. "I love you, I love you so much." He murmured the litany over and over again.
Newt smiled and buried his face in his new boyfriend's chest. "Love you, too, Tommy."
