Chapter 1
Myka Bering sat in the passenger seat of Pete's car, carefully going over the case file one last time before they reached their destination. Their most recent "ping" led to her and Pete driving the long hours to Springdale, Wisconsin, a small town that had suffered a series of small, mysterious explosions within the fast few days. No one had been hurt yet, but the incidents seemed to be escalating. In the seat next to her, Pete was somehow managing to drive while chowing down on a cream-filled donut, a treat Myka had never been fond of.
"I hope we get there soon," Pete managed in between bites. "I'm starving!"
Myka rolled her eyes, torn between revulsion at Pete's eating habits and wanting to laugh at her best friend's antics.
"You can eat when we solve the case. I want to get back to the Warehouse in time for Christmas tomorrow."
Pete sighed but nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it won't be Christmas unless we're back at the Warehouse with our family."
Myka stared out her window, hoping Pete wouldn't notice the tears that suddenly filled her eyes at the mention of their Warehouse family. Everyone else seemed to have forgotten that their family was missing a member. But there was no way she could forget. Not a day went by that she didn't think of Helena, living a perfect little life away from the Warehouse, from Myka. Sometimes she wondered if Helena thought of her too. She'd briefly considered calling her this morning, seeing as the town affected by the artifact in question was only an hour from where she lived, but quickly set the thought aside. Helena had shown no interest in their promised coffee date- hadn't so much as texted Myka since they had last met. And Myka was still too raw from their last meeting to risk being turned down yet again.
"Hey- you okay?" Pete turned to her with a concerned expression on his face. "I'm getting a weird vibe…."
"No. I'm fine," Myka managed. "And look, there's Springdale coming up. We'd better"- a loud bang, followed by a crash cut her off. The road in front of them was suddenly filled with blue smoke, a detail about the explosions Myka remembered reading in the case file. Suddenly, she caught sight of a figure darting through the mess ahead of them.
"Myka, run after the guy and I'll drive around and cut him off from the other side!" Pete ordered excitedly.
Myka nodded and ran out of the car, keeping sight of the slight figure ahead of her. As they ran out of the area affected by the explosion and the smoke began to clear, she squinted at the man in confusion. That's not a man! That's…
And then the figure turned. "Hello darling," HG Wells said demurely, "lovely to see you again."
AN: So this is my first fanfic in a while, and my first ever in the Bering and Wells/Warehouse 13 fandom. I know this chapter is a bit short, but I have a general idea of where I want this story to go and any ideas/criticism you guys have would be immensely helpful!
