Author's Note: I wish to warn you this is my very first major work as a fan-fiction writer. This story – despite all these years – is still a WIP. It's been on hiatus for years now, but with the release of the new Doom 4, I have been reinvigorated to revisit this story and begin the long grueling process of heavily editing and polishing this story since my writing has improved over the years. I decided to (and for the 3rd or 4th time) rewrite this very first chapter. I don't intend to rewrite all the other chapters – but as I said I am going to be going over them and giving them a good clean up. You will notice on some of the chapters that the title of the story on them and some read "Doom: Evil Returns and Heroes Rise" and others the current title. This is due to the story originally having a much longer name, but at some point I decided shorten and tried to do what I am doing now but didn't finish. While I go chapter by chapter in the fixes (some chapters will be merged to increase the length) I will correct the errors and plot-holes I neglected to fill years before. I hope you can forgive my dated writing style in (as of right now) are still chapters 2 – 14.

(I'll give my review of it at the end! Please don't take my proof-reading offensively; these are just my opinions, and what I think would help. You don't have to keep them if you don't want too. c:)

Prologue

Date: May 4th, 2147
Time: Unknown
Location: Hell

John Flynn Dacote felt the now usual sensation of teleportation to find himself in a small room, full of ammunition and the mysterious health items he learned to use. The Veteran Space Marine wasted no time restocking his nearly depleted ammo cache and tending to his wounds. Dacote looked to see the carcasses of Barons of Hell strung up painfully along the walls of this small room. Between the bodies was a portal that was decorated in much more elaborate symbols that he had never seen before. Dacote lifted his plasma rifle and stared at the ominous portal. A moment of fear grabbed at his chest. It freezing him where he stood.. A sense of dread came over him – like something he hadn't encountered before awaited him on the other side. Dacote swallowed his fear and stepped forward; he felt the feeling of being ripped away from where he was standing, arriving at another location.

The Space Marine opened his eyes to gape in horror to the sight of the largest demon he had ever seen. It was a big giant, goat head that appeared similar to images of Baphomet that seemed to be merged with the wall.

"Oremor nhoj, em llik tsum uoy emag eht niw ot."

Dacote dropped his plasma gun and slammed his hands against his ears; the demon's booming voice vibrated amongst the walls of the room. Yet, despite the loud voice; the sound of a cube emerging from the demon's exposed brain could be heard. Dacote raised his plasma rifle at it and fired a few rounds. No effect, it just spun and eventually burst into flames revealing a Mancubus. It stood sturdy with its flamethrower, shooting flames at the Space Marine. Dacote avoided the attack and fired his rifle. While he attacked, the giant demon fired another cube into a nearby corner. He quickly scanned the room and saw it was a simply shaped room, which had 4 ledges that were formed like stairs away from the Giant Demon. He ran along the platform to find a symbol of the Baphomet, having nothing to lose he pressed the symbol; the entire next ledge lowered. Taking advantage of this, he moved onto the ledge and rode the platform up to its previous level.

The next ledge was already covered in 5 demons, various of their size and their ferocity welcomed him. He quickly switched to his BFG 9000 and fired off a round of large green plasma. The demons exploded on impact; the plasma left nothing but blood and bone. Dacote ran forward, switching over to his chain gun, and sliced down the demons that dared to stop his progression. He spotted the sign of Baphomet on the other side of the ledge; he darted over and slammed his hand into it. Another ledge lowered, and he climbed on while it raised. He fired more bullets into the horde of oncoming demons. Dacote darted his eyes to the Giant Demon and saw the exposed brain shooting the cubes. Maybe that's a weakness… I might have an advantage from up top he thought as he ran across this platform. As the demons chased him down, he out-ran them; his time on the track team in High School proved useful in helping him survive these days. He dodged the plasma balls of a Baron of Hell and hit the next icon which lowered the last platform which he jumped on, simultaneously slaying the oncoming Cacodemon and Reverent. With the platform momentarily cleared, he switched out his chain gun for the BFG 9000 and fired off a round at the brain. The plasma blob smacked into the brain, but the blast seemed was uneffective.

"FUCK!" Dacote swore. "The BFG blast is too big to penetrate…" Two Arch-Viles approached him from either side. He stumbled back and fired one round at each. Luckily, the demons were close enough, and the explosion obliterated them. Refocusing on the Baphomet, Dacote switched out to his second strongest weapon: the Rocket Launcher. He fired rockets, and watched nervously as the rockets entered directly into demon's brain. The demon growled with discomfort-no major damage. The Space Marine, gritted his teeth in frustration as he slowly backed up until he felt bumped into something. He turned to see a switch designed from a large skull, without thinking he flipped the switch; the sound of metal and flesh grinding against each other encompassed the room. One large pillar rose in the center, in front of the icon of Baphomet-and a line directly to the brain. Dacote grinned as an idea popped into his head, I could use this… he thought. .

He pulled out his pistol and plasma rifle, holding them awkwardly as he raced forward to the center pillar. The sounds of rounds echoed the room as he shot at the lesser demons in front of him. He continuously hopped across each platform until his boots met an acidic, sludge-like substance on the ground floor.. He found a switch on the center pillar and stepped on it; the pillar descended. He retreated to closest ledge-the very first one-and fired at the demons who waited patiently down below. When it hit the ground floor, he jumped onto the lowered pillar without hesitation and while he waited for the pillar to rise back up, he switched out to his rocket launcher and as soon as the pillar reached its max height, he aimed his rocket launcher at the much closer and leveled brain. Dacote launched a salvo of rockets at the brain which all entered into it and passed deep into its cranium. Roars of pain and terror washed over the room. As each missile burst, explosions pushed their ways through the Giant Demon's head, explosions ripping through its face.

Dacote flew off his feet, landing on his back harshly, losing all sense of vertigo. His eyes slammed shut and accepted the fate of this being his doom.In that moment he prayed that the human race would survive, that his fiancée Maria was safe, and that this meant everything was over. He was unsure whether he was being transported or if this was the feeling death. A harsh light emerged; it caused his eyes to strain. His eyes adjusted to see the blue, sunny sky of… Earth. John Dacote had found himself, lying in a field, not far from his hometown. He looked towards the ruined city to see that there was no longer smoke and the smell of death and brimstone on Earth anymore . He sat there flabbergasted to his surroundings.

Had he done it? Had he won? Has he earned the right to live? He asked these questions to himself. He tried to wait for some magical answer to answer. None came but he didn't need to since he realized on his own… he did win… for now.
