Sophie was a true child of the night. Not that she was a fanged demon craving for blood. The only thing she was craving for was chocolate. But Sophie loved the night. She felt most comfortable then and loved to explore the world when it had turned dark and shadows filled the empty streets, much to the annoyance of her parents, from whom the 8-year-old always managed to escape.

This time Sophie had gotten through the back-door, while her mother had been preparing dinner and her father had talked to one important client of his. Now she was wandering through the streets of Sunnydale, making her way to her favourite playground. On her way she saw that many houses had been decorated, as it was only some days till New Year's Day. On the house next to her it was saying "2100- Here We Come" in big bright letters.

While she was occupied with her surroundings, a dark figure stepped out of the shadows. But Sophie was not afraid.

Because since she was a baby, her mother had often told her that their whole family had their own guardian. Since many, many years, whenever a member of their family had been in trouble, there came the guardian, saving and helping them. And that guardian watched over her, too, that was what her mother told her every time.

The vampire came closer. "What is a little girl like you doing here all alone? Aren't you afraid of the monsters in the dark?" He laughed at her, but Sophie stayed calm.

"No, I am not afraid. You must know, there is a guardian angel watching over me".

The vampire started to laugh again, but stopped when he saw the smile on the girls face and felt that something was going wrong. But just when he had come to that conclusion, he was dusted from behind.

The girl's saviour kneeled down so that he was at the girls eye level.

"You really shouldn't be out here all alone. It isn't safe here."

The girl shook her head. "Of course it is safe for me. Because you are here."

"I might not be here the next time."

"You will. Because you promise to be here for us. As we promised we will be here for you."

The dark haired man smiled at Sophie, then he picked her up.

"I'd better bring you home. Your mum will be mad right when she finds out your not home."

When he arrived at the girl's house, he let her down and she ran to the door and rang the bell. Immediately it opened and a tall woman stood in the frame.

"Sophie Angel! How could you again run away!? Your father and I were so afraid. That means no TV and no chocolate the whole week, little girl."

She pushed the girl in, but before she closed the door, she said into the night.

"Thanks. We'll see on New Year's Day."

Then she closed the door.

Standing hidden in the shadows, a smile crossed Angel's face.
