Word

You always said no to him. You said it so often that it almost always came out as a reflex. The word made you sound like a baby learning her first word, but you didn't notice. The word was simple yet powerful. And you liked using it because of that fact. The way you saw it, you wouldn't ever have to explain yourself by saying that word.

But then he began to question your decision to say the word.

"Why not?" he'd respond.

You remain frozen, just like you'd been hit with a petrifying curse. You try to think of what to say to that, for you had never expected him to question why not.

"Well," you'd say slowly. "Why should I go out with someone like you?" A small voice in the back of your mind wondered why you were asking this when you didn't want to talk to him in the first place.

He'd look at you with his hazel eyes and grin a grin that clearly told you that he knew something you didn't know. You couldn't help but be a little curious about went on in his mind.

"Because I'm James Potter," he'd respond. "What else do you need to know?"

Your fists would clench into small balls. "That's exactly why I say no." you say as calmly as you can before you turn on your heel and walk off. Almost every single time you feel his eyes on your back, and every single time you are tempted to turn around and glare at him for doing so. But you'd never. It'd only lead him into thinking that you were weakening. And you weren't in the slightest.

Then everything changed. You can't recall when it did. But he stopped asking you out. You can remember more than a few times where he started to ask you something and you reflexively said no, but he only wanted to ask if you could help him with an essay. You remember how red your cheeks would get and how embarrassed you felt when you let your reflexes get the better of you.

And then something very terrible happened. It caught you completely by surprise. The green-eyed monster overcame you every time he was talking with another girl. You had no idea why you were feeling this way, and every time you tried to analyze the situation you would come up with the wrong answer every single time.

But finally you unintentionally found your answer. He asked you out again, and this time your reflex was different. It felt weird saying the word, and you had come to realize that that was the first time you had ever said that to him.

"Yes."
