He'd been missing for a week. The Winchesters had only been in town two days. They knew the creature didn't kill its victims right away, preferring to let them sit in the dark for days.

It liked the taste of fear with its meat.

Still, they were grasping when it came to hope - they grudgingly devised a plan for what to do with his body should they find the worst.

By the time they found the captive's cell, the fugly was dead and they were both bloodied and bruised. It was worthwhile to find the victim weakened, but alive.
