No Day But Today
"Knock knock," Cal said.
Gillian turned. She saw who it was, then turned back to the window. Rain fell down in sheets. The drops on the window raced each other to the bottom. Gillian sat on her desk, arms crossed, gazing blankly at the window, a little half smile on her face.
"Hey," Cal said, going to sit beside her.
Gillian didn't look at him. She shook her head. "I can't believe Alec is gone."
"Neither can I."
"After all this…" she trailed off.
"I'm sorry, love."
"I'm not." And it was true. Cal studied her, tilting his head to the side to read her emotions. There was not one hint of sadness in her face. She was confused, but that was, of course, only to be expected. Her eyes were slightly widened, and the corners of her lips were slightly turned up. That was hope.
"Hope?" Cal asked, not understanding.
"What?"
"You're hopeful." He gestured to her face. "Eyes… lips… that's hope." He snapped, and Gillian blinked. "Why?"
Gillian's grin widened. "Because there's no day but today, and today, Alec is gone."
"But you still miss him," Cal stated.
"And love him."
Cal looked hopelessly lost. It was the first time Gillian had ever seen him so confused, and it would probably be the only.
"Cal, there's no day but today. Today, Alec is out of the picture and you're here," Gillian explained.
Cal nodded slowly. "So basically, no bast- er, Alec, just me?"
"No Alec," Gillian confirmed.
"Just me. I think I can live with that. Alec is gone?" he asked again.
"No day but today means no day but today."
Cal smiled. "If you say so, love."
"Which I do."
"Alright. Listen, I have some work that needs to be done. A client is asking for a lawyer now, and I'd rather finish the case up before one gets involved." Cal stood and headed for the door.
"Oh, um, okay," Gillian said, a little taken aback at his sudden leave.
He paused in the doorway and looked back at her. Their eyes met. Sauntering back into her office, Cal planted a quick kiss on her cheek.
Gillian looked up at him, even more surprised. "What…"
Cal smiled at her. "No day but today, love." With that, he spun on his heel and left, not looking back.
