Hidden Away!

"Beatrix Franklin, ye get in here now and store these cabbages properly. They're stinking up the place." He bellows from behind the old red barn.

She quickly takes a couple of short puffs of her fag then stubs it out, and stores the rest in her pocket for later. She hates harvest time. Anything would be better than lugging fruits and vegetables around for winter's keep. A young beautiful girl was hidden underneath all that dirt, rips in her dress and dirty boots. She wore her hair in pigtails and they bounced as she skips across the field. It doesn't take her long as she reaches the big old barn. She shivers as she stood outside the big doors, perhaps it's because the cold has set in or perhaps it's the ghosts of her past. Either way she hates this place. It smelled of old rotting wood, and hay. It makes he queasy to her stomach, and the last thing she needs is to loose her waffles she ate earlier that day. She hesitates for a brief moment then enters.

"Yes, of course daddy."

"It's bad enough when yer half-inching fags but smoking them right under my nose." He took a hold of her arm, but not hurting her. "Now, be a good little girl and kiss daddy."

Because she could smell the sour ale on his breath she leans forward and plants a quick kiss on his cheek then backs up two steps afraid of what could be next. "Good girl. Off ye get!"

She does in fact slip back under the house where she felt quite safe and warm. She listens for his heavy footsteps across the wooden floor above her. He would be in his sitting chair probably past out drunk, which was fine with her. She pulls a few things from her hiding place: books and blankets with her dollies. She snuggles down into her nest and opens her favorite book; The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin!

She falls asleep until the next time he bellows for her attention.
