It shouldn't have been this way. Peridot had known they weren't ready but they hadn't had the time to prepare. But that didn't matter at the moment. All she was able to think about as she held back the beast assailing them was of the sea blue gem behind her. There was so much she wanted to say to her, and yet she could not. In a way she knew this was her fault, she hadn't been able to open Lapis' heart soon enough, and they couldn't maintain their fusion to save their life.
As the gem on her forehead began to crack she turned her head toward the other gem. It was a sight worth dying for in her mind and so she sought to protect it. Unfortunately there was no chance that any of them were going to make it out alive. Garnet was already shattered to pieces, Pearl and Amethyst followed shortly after, and now she and Lapis were next. She turned her head back towards the attack she was desperately holding back before speaking to, whether she knew it or not, the love of Periodt's life.
"Lapis, I just want to let you know before it's too late."
The blue gem turned her attention from the boy laying on the, "ground," unconscious. Her gem was so broken she was incapable of speech at this point but she managed to mouth, "What?" Peridot continued all the same.
"I know I always gave you a hard time, and I was annoying, and I sort of technically kidnapped you and brought you back here, but… but what I mean is…" She trailed off not quite finding the words she desired. So she thought back to how she would have wanted Percy and Pierre to do it. It became easy then.
"Lapis, I love y-"
*Crunch*
Tears immediately filled Lapis Lazuli's eyes as the sound, and sight, of her protector disappearing enveloped her. It seemed like forever that the gem fragments were falling in the middle of the void. In shock she just sat there as the blast that destroyed Peridot washed over her, shattering her in much the same way.
"Peri, I know."
Her last thoughts were filled with the gem who sacrificed herself just then. As their fragments fell together they were given one last chance to speak before the void consumed them all. Their regrets were made clear to each other.
"If only we had met in a different situation…"
"In a different point in time…"
"Yeah…"
"Then maybe…"
"Just maybe…"
Their fragments grew closer as the world faded around them. A glow began to emanate from them as they grew closer and closer. Finally they touched and a blinding light bellowed forth. Their wish resonated throughout the void, creating something out of nothing, and bringing light back to the darkness.
If only.
(A/N)
Well then. I hope you all enjoyed that. Anyone visiting from my other stories I would like to extend an apology. I've had serious writers block and cant continue my RWBY content at the moment. I hope this story will work out as a jackhammer to break that block though. And if you are coming from something else I have written and enjoy this make sure to let me know. If you found me through this give my other works a read, it will give you an idea of the level of writing to expect from me.
Now that I have talked too much this is Topaz signing off.
Read, review, and live life well
