It was barely past 5:30am when Wallander pounded on Martinsson's door. There was a faint shuffling inside, but Magnus didn't come to open it so he knocked louder and called out his name. He almost felt sorry as he heard wearied footsteps approaching, but then he reminded himself of the little girl whose parents were missing and that Martinsson's beauty sleep was less important.
"Finally," he exclaimed impatiently as the lock unlatched and the door opened. Kurt fell silent as he found himself face to face with Magnus, except it wasn't Magnus. The skin was paler and the hair was darker and just a little too short to be put in a ponytail. The green eyes were the same except for the utter hostility that filled them as they leveled towards the investigator.
"Um.." Wallander backpedaled from the glare and held the case file to his chest like a shield. "I'm looking for Magnus."
"Yes." His lips twisted around the hissed word, and he sneered as he continued. "The whole building is aware of that by now."
"Yeah, sorry." Kurt tried a sheepish grin. "Is he in?"
"No." Magnus' clone dismissed and turned back inside, the door left open in what the investigator assumed was an invitation.
He trailed the younger man into the kitchen. "Where is he then?"
"Out for a run."
"At six in the morning?" Kurt regretted the skepticism in his tone, especially when the dark haired Martinsson fixed him with a murderous look.
"Do you assume all your coworkers are lazy or is Manus* just special?" He growled before snatching the coffee pot off the counter and pouring himself a mug, stalking over to the fridge as he sipped it and very pointedly offered none to the older man.
Wallander retreated to the kitchen island. He noted the odd pronunciation of Magnus' name and wondered if that was the younger investigator's preference, after all this man ought to know. He felt like he was floundering around without a lifejacket, with a shark bearing Magnus' face circling him.
"So," He started, just to break the silence before it became stiffing. "You're Magnus' brother?"
"No, I'm his mother."
Kurt laughed, then his chuckle died as the man's expression remained completely blank. He flicked through the case file, so that he had something to do besides twiddle his thumbs and wait for his coworker to return.
A.N.: *Manus is a variant of Magnus. Crossing Loki into Wallander...hmmm, I have no comment on that except weeeeeee.
