"No," Breathed 21-year-old Sirius Black as he stared at the broken house that once belonged to his best friend. Swinging himself of off his motorcycle Sirius ran up to where the door once was, the object in question was currently lying in splinters all over the floor.

Cautiously stepping over the threshold Sirius looked around. Furniture was lying in a mess all over the lounge, hex marks stained the walls and carpet.

"Prongs?" Sirius called, desperately hoping that his best friend had somehow managed to escape.

But he hadn't.

Lying on the floor was the unmoving body of James Potter. His hazel eyes that were once filled with a mischievous spark were currently dead. Sirius dropped to his knees and cradled the body of his best friend, tears threatening to spill from his eyes.

Sirius was brought out of his stupor by a child's cry from upstairs. Sirius' head snapped up.

"Harry?" Sirius gently laid James' head on the floor he gazed into his best friend's hazel eyes for the last time and with two fingers he closed them, glancing around his gaze fell on James' wand. Sirius picked it up and placed it by James' side.

Sirius stood up and headed towards the stairs, he placed his foot on the first step and it creaked loudly, slowly but with a fast-like elegance Sirius reached the top of the stairs and headed towards where the child's whimpering came from. The nursery.

First his eyes glanced across the still body of Lily Potter. Her beautiful emerald eyes looked dead. Next to her was a small messy-haired boy, Harry was shaking his mother's shoulder and muttering the continuing mantra of 'mummy'. He looked up as Sirius entered and held up his hands.

"Pa'foot," He asked then turned to his mother. "Mummy," Sirius shook his head and knelt down next to Harry and did the same to her as he did to James'. Looking at his godson properly for the first time since he entered, Sirius saw that Harry had blood smeared on his forehead coming from a deep lightening shaped cut. Sirius picked Harry up and headed for the stairs.

As Sirius stepped outside of the house Hagrid appeared (Sirius suspected illegal portkey but didn't ask).

"Sirius?" He asked, Sirius nodded and glanced tearfully back at his friends' house.

"They're gone Hagrid," He muttered, Hagrid gazed at him sympathetically.

"Got orders from Dumbledore. Meant to bring 'arry to 'is aunt and uncle," Sirius stared at Hagrid.

"But I'm his godfather, Lily and James wanted me to have him," He stated, Hagrid looked at him sadly.

"I'm sorry Sirius, I've got orders," Sirius looked into the emerald eyes of his godson and sighed, enveloping Harry in a hug which the younger boy returned. He looked at Hagrid and nodded, handing Harry to him.

"You can use my motorcycle to get him there, I won't need it anymore," He said, Hagrid nodded in thanks and climbed onto the motorcycle. He then safely put Harry in a sort of sling around him and started up the engine, nodded his head in Sirius' direction and took off into the night.

Sirius stood in the middle of the road and turned to face the broken house before him, feeling something he had never felt before in his life.

Lost.
