Malicious Intent

Rio had always thought herself to be average, just another face on the crowded streets of Ikebukuro. She had an ordinary life, one with nothing of real consequence. It was all about silence. There was no reason for excitement, nothing for her to be genuinely excited about. Being part of the new flock in high school, she was about as alone as the rest of her classmates. And, given the situation she'd found herself in a few days earlier, Rio had decided not to branch out. So as to live up to this, she would go to school in the mornings, and come home to finish assignments in the afternoon.

That was all she had the courage to do.

She really hated him now, this Nakura. He'd lied to her on multiple occasions, making her feel like she wasn't alone in the face of this misery. But, after meeting him, after seeing him for who he was, she'd realized that she was alone to bear this burden, and thus started to hate him and herself.

"Would it be okay if we meet?" he'd said in one of his messages. "I don't want to be alone anymore. Maybe... we could disappear together."

Strangely, these messages were still on her phone and in her inbox, a quiet, yet lingering, reminder of her own stupidity. She had meant to delete them after their meeting, but it had continued to slip her mind. Rio had been focused on making sure that her father's secret remain such, and that no one outside their household find out. Were that to happen, it was certain that things would go badly. It was, after all, what her mother really cared about.

A foolish idea, agreeing to meet him. He'd very nearly killed her, allowing her to hang over the side of that parking garage after having had her kidnapped and saved. A sick thing to do, really. Making it worse was the fact that she'd been a pawn in his twisted games. That he'd moved her according to designs concocted solely for his entertainment. It wouldn't be surprising at all if she found out that other people had been caught in the same web.

She didn't know what to think of him anymore, as she'd silently called him every last name she could imagine. Still his words, his face, his smile, were still worming their way around inside her head.

"Thanks for letting me see just how ugly you are. You're as hideous as the rest of humanity."
