Roger stared at the thin, red hand on the clock, silently urging it to move faster. Pre-Calculus was certainly the worst idea ever invented. And he knew that once that hand hit the right number, he would have a blissful 23 hours away from this desk in this room. He tapped his pencil on the side of the desk impatiently through those last few, painful seconds, and when the bell finally rang, he eagerly began packing his bag up. It wasn't like he had any wild plans for the evening, but anything was better than sitting in that dark, dusty room, pretending to understand what was being taught.

As he turned his body in an attempt to toss his pencil into his bag, he accidentally hit his arm against the desk, causing the table to sway and his math book which had sat just at the edge of it to fall on the ground, right in front of a pair of feet. They stopped in their tracks, and Roger looked up slowly in horror. The owner of those feet was the one and only Ava May. Whom Roger had been completely and utterly in love with since kindergarten. And who could blame him? She was absolutely beautiful. Long, blonde hair and sparkling green eyes. There were plenty of other girls in his grade that were just as good-looking as she was, but her kindness made her stand out. She was soft-spoken, graceful, and always careful with the things she said. Nobody, even the most jealous girls, could say a bad word about her. And Roger melted whenever he was around her, despite him being remarkably good at hiding his feelings.

Roger's thoughts were interrupted by Ava clearing her throat. He snapped back into the real world. "Oh! I'm- I'm so sorry—" he mumbled, struggling to pick up the book. In one swift move, the girl bent down, delicately picked up the heavy book, and placed it back on his desk.

"It's okay." Ava smiled at him. She put a hand on his shoulder, gave it a squeeze, and let it gently fall off as she glided past him.

Roger waited until he was sure the girl had left the room, sighed, and banged his head down on the desk. He didn't come back up for a while.
