Emma barely recognizes Jefferson outside of a well-tailored suit. His hair is tousled; the red ringing his eyes tells her it's not from sleep. He looks nearly as mad as the storybook character he claims himself to be, but he's still the handsomest mess she's ever seen.

"Did you miss me, Princess?" He masks the surprise on his face with a smirk, and Emma wonders if she'll ever know him beyond the biting sarcasm he uses to hide his real feelings.

"No one should have to be on New Year's," she says, shoving past him with a bottle of wine.
