It was Christmas morning and Cindy-Lou Who
gave The Grinch a gift tagged "just for you".
He shook it. He shaked it and said "What can it be?"
Cindy said, "Here's a hint. It starts with a "C".
"A candy cane?" The Grinch said.
"Some curlers to curl the green hairs on my head?"
Cindy said, "Just open the thing!"
So The Grinch carefully pulled off the string.
Then he tore off the paper nice and slow
and peeled off the lid and said, "What do you know?
Why, it's a cat, just for me!
Thanks, Cindy-Lou Who. Thank you times three!"
The cat jumped quickly out of the box,
saw Max and hid behind some cave rocks.
"Don't be afraid," said The Grinch, "This is Max.
He wouldn't hurt you...um...er...Rax!
Yes, Rax is a good name for you.
Better than Betty or Bobbityboo.
Rax, it is! Now, come out and play.
Cindy-Lou Who won't be here all day.
Besides, it's Christmas-a time for good cheer
not for hiding behind rocks in fear.
Max, he wouldn't hurt a fly.
I'd pull his tail if he did try."
Cindy-Lou gasped. The Grinch said, "Just Kidding!
But please stop all of this hiding and hidding.
You're a lovely green cat with beautiful fur.
I'll brush it and pet you until you purr.
I'll feed you steak and ham and cheese.
Please come out and meet me, please!"
But old Rax did NOT come out
no matter how much Grinch did pout.
Should The Grinch trade his loyal dog
for a hamster or a hog?
How he longs to hold Rax tight
in his arms all through the night
or watch her chase a ball of yarn
or catch some mice out in the barn.
Why does Christmas hate The Grinch?
His every hair? His every inch?
It makes his heart as cold as ice
and if you love Christmas...well...think twice.
Because Christmas could turn its back on YOU,
even if you're as sweet as a Who
and a cat in a corner is all you'll get-
a mean old rotten miserable pet
wrapped up in a box to look pretty
but inside an awful KITTY!
