Jealousy was an ugly thing. It was bitter and heavy and rose from the pit of your stomach- something unbidden and unwanted, but clearly set to stay.
Lee realized then, that he had never truly been envious of anyone before, and what he had thought was jealousy paled in comparison.
Other people were achieving the dreams he himself had worked his entire life for. Naruto had beaten Neji and now, in front of his eyes, Sasuke was beating Gaara.
They were achieving his goals, those others, others that may not care about it as much as him. They would not rub it in; he knew that much, but the mere sight of them sent a wave of sickness to his stomach and the overwhelming desire to be alone made itself known. He couldn't blame them, but he couldn't stand the sight of them.
They were better than him.
It had never been a problem for him before. Until know, when it stared him so blatantly in the face.
They were better.
What was worse was the feeling of powerlessness that swept over him. He was in the stands, still broken from defeat, while others had carried on fighting.
He could feel Gai's eyes on the back of his head, but chose rather not to notice.
And Lee decided that he would never let Gai, or anyone else see the envious monster buried inside him.
And he shut his eyes for the briefest moment, and prepared to congratulate Sasuke the next time he saw him.
He could be content on the outside.
What did you think?
