He knocked on the doors and waited. There was a rustle on the other side then a lock being turned off and the doors opened.
"Derek!" the woman called pleasantly surprised, her arms already going around him in a fierce embrace.
"Hello, Mom." He said tenderly, hugging her back.
"It's so good to see you." She smiled brilliantly, ushering him inside.
"I couldn't leave without visiting you." He told her with a charming smile. "Not when I was so close home."
She turned to look back at him and her smile fell down. "Oh, baby…" she moaned seeing the pain in his eyes. She hurried to hug him again. "I'm so proud of you." She told him.
He stiffened in her arms but allowed her to hug him. "I… I couldn't keep quiet anymore, Mom." He told her, his voice choking slightly. "They needed to know. They needed to understand."
"I know, baby." She squeezed him tightly, then looked into his face, her eyes on his. "You are a very strong man, Derek. Your father would be so proud of you." She told him solemnly.
He didn't say anything, but simply allowed his Mother to lead him to the kitchen table.
"Can I get you something, honey?" she asked as he sat down.
He looked at her sheepishly. "Actually, I need you to do your peach cobbler." He told her, giving her his best charming smile.
She nodded knowingly at him. "Penelope's been carving it again?" she asked with a teasing smile.
"We all know it's the best." He shot back at her with a wide grin.
"That it is." She nodded turning to her cupboards and preparing everything she'll need. "You should bring that sweet girl home again, Derek." She scolded him slightly.
He shrugged. "I can't really. Penelope works the best in Quantico." He deflected.
"I was talking about next holiday, not for work related events." His Mother threw him a look.
He shrugged, not meeting her eyes. "She's seeing someone."
"And whose fault is that?" his Mother asked, a tiny scold in her voice. She took out the spoons and bowls.
"Mom." Morgan's voice held a warning.
She just shook her head. "Yes, yes, I forgot, you are just best friends." She told him dismissingly, waving her hand at him.
"That we are." He insisted.
"Su-re." she opened the fridge. "I better hurry up so it's ready for that future daughter-in-law of mine." She told him, ignoring his protests, just like she always did.
Derek groaned, rolling his eyes. "Not you too."
His Mom looked at him. "What was that baby?"
He looked at her with a frown. "Penelope's been calling you her future mother-in-law. Have the two of you been talking behind my back recently?" he peered at her carefully.
His Mother smiled cheekily. "Only about you." She told him with a wink and put the ingredients in the biggest bowl.
"Mom." Morgan groaned.
"Don't worry." She said. "We share only the good bits with each other."
He shook his head. "Women in my life. They will be the death of me." He told her good-naturedly.
She shot him a brilliant smile. "Don't be a baby. You love us."
He smiled a tender smile at her. "That I do, Mom, that I do."
