Top grades in the whole seventh year and she's so smart, so observant. The brain at the back which no one ever notices and no one's ever going to like her. Except for Harry. And she was glad when he had accidentally caressed her hands, happy that he had kissed her in sixth year, ecstatic when they had started dating, in heaven when they had first made love.
And it had gone downhill since then. The caress had been less, the kisses were rare, he doesn't even look her in the eye anymore. At least that's what everyone noticed. And if everyone else noticed it shouldn't she? No. Ignorance is bliss.
A caress. A kiss. An I love you. Harry's name being panted out. But something's wrong with this picture. Hermione's name isn't being moaned. Hermione's hair isn't being tousled because Hermione isn't in the picture. And where's Hermione now? Up in the tower, in the dormitory, on the single couch, alone awaiting for Harry's return from his detention. But it was pointless. She knew he wouldn't be back until morning and when he came back, he wouldn't smell like himself. Despite that, she'll still kiss him and love him and be oblivious to the pity stares her dorm mates give her when they've learned Harry has been gone for the night.
A caress. A kiss. An I love you. But where are Harry's responses now? Hermione doesn't know, doesn't notice and she seems satisfied with the sigh he's emitted, a sigh of boredom she'd mistaken for contentment.
A caress. A kiss. An I love you. And Harry's out the door.
It was just a farce, an arm around her shoulders when they were walking down the hall to potions. Shouldn't they be sitting together instead of on the opposite side of the room? Shouldn't Harry be sitting with Hermione instead of Draco Malfoy, his worst enemy.
A caress.
But Hermione's hand isn't touching Harry's dry ones. Draco's pale fingers will get to moisten them tonight.
Top grades in the whole seventh year and she's so smart, so observant. The brain at the back which no one ever notices and no one's ever going to like her. Except Ron. But she's not going to notice. Nothing else is going to capture her attention from the caress Harry and Draco share that gets more and more obvious everyday after Lavender told her where he goes every night. How smart is she really?
