He stood straight and tall, despite the pouring rain. Lightning flashed, and wind tore at his clothes, but still he remained motionless. It was all he could do. He had known from the beginning that she would die…so why was it so hard to accept? If he waited long enough, perhaps he could begin to understand.
Closing his eyes, he imagined her face as it had been on that first day he had seen her…the gap-toothed smile, the messy black hair, and the sweetness that had shone through her hazel eyes. These were things that he would miss, but they were not what truly mattered. It was her bubbly personality, her determination to conquer all obstacles despite her ineptitude that he would do anything to bring back. She had always been so open; she had hidden nothing from him.
What would she want him to do now? He burned with the desire for revenge, but if she had lived, then she would have prohibited this. He knew that she wouldn't want anyone to get hurt on her account, but he fervently hoped that Naraku would meet a painful end sometime in the near future.
If only some small part of her had been left for a proper burial, then it might not have been so hard. If the miasma had not dissolved her body, then he might have been able to bring her back. He had believed her to be untouchable as long as he was alive. How had things gone so horribly wrong? It was impossible…and yet here he was: without her.
He bent his head, overwhelmed by his usually hidden emotions. He wished, for the first time, that he had not been watching his feelings so closely for so long. He might have told her how he felt for her before it was too late. Did it really matter now? Was there a reason to confess his heart when he knew that she couldn't hear him? It was the sort of thing a human would do. It was the sort of thing that she would have done.
When he tried to speak the words, his voice broke with grief. After a moment, he tried again.
"Rin…" he trailed off, unsure of how to continue. "You deserve to know…I love you. My dear Rin…to me you were…family." His heart was shattering into a million pieces, and he knew that the one being that could have mended it was now gone. "I am sorry," he whispered to the crying sky.
As he raised his head, the wind beat at him, seeming to press an unspoken message into his heart.
I love you too, Lord Sesshomaru.
