AN: This fic is based off of mushie.r's Lams animatic of 'The Zombie Song' which you can (hopefully) check out here e6e8DLPOmyw I put the gaps in as I have heard that does not allow links and I have seen others do the same. If it doesn't work please say. Please also say if there are any trigger warnings I need to put on it. This is just my take on the song and your view may well be different.
The Zombie Song
They had known each other long before corpses began to walk but they had only began to date after Eliza 'died'. Their happiness (and you can call it that, for despite Alex grieving for his wife and John for one of his closest friends, they were recovering and they were happy) was brief as it was not really all that long before Alex himself 'died'. He was an odd case as he seemed much more human than the rest of the diseased. At that time he was more human, as proven by his self-imposed leave from the group.
His leave lasted a little while, about as long as his humanity did. He was still able to keep up the appearance of humanity and it was enough to convince John that he still was, essentially, human. He was not. But then again, just what is it that makes us human? Alex was still humanoid. Broken, bloody and bruised but humanoid nonetheless. Regardless, John believed that caring for others was what made a human and by that standard Alex was just as much as a monster as the rest of his kind, perhaps more so, for he was, in at least some shadowy corner of his mind, aware of the heinous crimes he was committing. Of the lives he was ruining. Of the monsters he was creating. John was not aware of the monster Alex had become and continued to love Alex. Not as he had been doing while Alex was on leave and not as he had done in that wonderful time when they were both as whole and beautiful as most humans but almost giddily, almost obsessively and in a very delusional manner.
At first John kept Alex well away. Then at arm's length. Then closer. Then closer and closer and closer until John believed that he could not take the short distance between them any longer so he kissed Alex. Despite his friend's warnings, despite the so very ineptly named common sense, despite all this and more, he kissed Alex for the last time. For it was the last kiss either of them had on this earth. John's friends had been right. Alex was not human and as John kissed him, Alex bit John and felt no remorse for it. John's friends (who had once also been Alex's) were so very human and as John let himself get bitten none had more tears in their eyes than Laf, who fired the gun that killed them both, and none felt more remorse.
