That Smile
Summary: Something about his smile terrified her… SanjixNami, takes place after chapter 813
Author's note: After reading chapter 813, I just had to write about it! Sanji-kun was such a total badass. I fell in love with him all over again! *fangirl swoon* So I put All That I'm Living For by Evanescence and came up with this little fic. Please enjoy!
She always loved his smile. It was a smile that told her everything was going to be okay. He'd even smiled at her after waking up after Eneru fried him back on Skypeia. He was always putting her mind at ease just when she needed it most. She wasn't sure how he knew, but he did. He always knew and maybe that was what irritated her. Or maybe it irritated her because this time he was lying. To her. He never lied to her before. And maybe he wasn't lying now, but she'd seen that type of smile before.
It was the type of smile Bellemere had made the day she died.
The smile itself wasn't a lie, but the words before it were. "I promise I'll be back. Tell everyone hi for me."
Those words had such a finality to them. They sounded like he was putting up a brave front. He was. Any one of his present crewmates could see that he was stressed. Something had really hit a nerve. The Vinsmoke family sounded like a powerful family from what Brooke said, but they couldn't be bad people, could they? Sanji was so kind despite his attitude towards his male crewmates. He was always there for any of his crew, even when they didn't expect it. He was a behind-the-scenes type of guy. He was the type of guy who came up with a plan to get Crocrodile off their trail. He was the type of guy who could take control of any situation when he needed to protect a friend.
He never talked about his past, but Nami had just thought it was because no one had ever asked. It had never once occurred to her that their fiery, trash-talking cook had anything to hide. He wasn't like Robin. He wasn't reserved. He wore his heart on his sleeve. He was one of the most emotional men she'd ever met. Whatever he was hiding, it was big. His smile didn't reassure her this time. It terrified her.
She knew what a smile like that meant. It meant he wasn't even sure he would be coming back. She wouldn't hear him fawn over her again. She had always pretended it bothered her, but it hadn't. At this point, she would take him being back in her body if it meant he'd come back to her. Sure he was a pervert, but she knew he'd never really hurt her. In the end, he was always a gentleman. A gentleman didn't lie.
Even as she rushed into her captain's arms, she was still trying to convince herself that smile was real.
Author's note: It's been at least two years since I last wrote a fic so sorry if I'm a bit rusty. I've been working on my original work (who needs money anyway?) but I would love to write a new fic at least once a week if I can find the time! Please review and tell me what you think!
