IN THE COURTROOM

Author's Note: This just kind of popped out. I'm not really sure what it is. Reviews are, of course, welcome as well as suggestions for improvement.
She loved him best in the courtroom. Especially when they were on opposing teams. Life was weird like that. The verbal fighting was... a sexual release of sorts. The dueling of words almost fulfilling that particular desire. Almost.
The case was complicated and simple. Kind of like their relationship. A lover's spat had gotten out of hand. The argument had turned fatal. Harm was defending an once innocent girl—now turned vicious killer.
He was giving his closing statement. This had always been her favorite part. She had given her own closing moments ago. There was little she could do now to sway the jury's opinion. And so she watched him. The curl of his lip as he made an impassioned plea to the jury to spare the young girl's life. His neatly trimmed figure pacing the courtroom. He turned to face her and the fire in his eyes caught her off guard. For a moment she was surprised by their depth, by their beauty. By his beauty. She loved him, perhaps the most she ever had, at that particular moment. The courtroom shut them off from the outside world and all that existed here, now, in this moment, was a man doing his job. The thrill of the law, the power of rhetoric, pumped through his veins. There was no past, no future. Only the present. His passion ignited her. His love of duty and honor and truth shone through his eyes. Her love of him shone through hers.
He glanced over towards her. And paused. There was something in her eyes... Hoping it was something and fearing it was nothing, he turned away from her and concluded his speech. The jury was dismissed to make their decision and others in the courtroom began filing out. She approached him to offer one last chance at a deal. He rebuffed and she turned to leave.
"Mac." She stopped. "Earlier when I was making my closing..." He paused, wondering if he was right to reveal his hopes. "Why did you look at me like that?" She needed no explanation for his question. She paused, pondering her answer.
"I love you best in the courtroom." Her answer was soft. Simple. True. He stood in disbelief as she quietly left him alone in the empty courtroom. Her gentle words echoed loudly through his head. In a dream-like stupor, he left.
THE NEXT DAY
"Guilty."
Mac momentarily reveled in her win but her triumph soon segued into exhaustion as the long hours of preparation for the case finally peaked. She opened her briefcase to put away a stray paper and was surprised to see a picture of herself among her things. The camera had captured her mid-argument, probably during the televised court martial a few years back. Curious, she flipped it over.
"I love her best in the courtroom." The handwriting was familiar. She looked up and met his eyes. The truth of the statement, the depth of his feelings were reflected there. The heated gaze was broken by the chaos of the courtroom. Shyly, she joined him as he began to exit the room. They paused by the doors leading out.
"I'll see ya tomorrow, Mac."
"Same time, same place." She replied. They both smiled. The weight on their shoulders lessened from the act of sharing their secrets. They would always have the courtroom.
