Where do I fit in the picture?

Or do I really fit at all?

Or have I become a fixture

On an old forgotten wall?

-Clay Walker, Where Do I Fit in the Picture?

When the world ended, Shane Walsh felt a renewed sense of purpose. His best friend was gone but there was no time to grieve the loss. Instead he threw himself into protecting the people Rick had loved most: Lori and Carl. And in doing that, he had connected with Lori in ways he had never expected he would.

He had fallen for her, hard and fast. But he supposed that shouldn't have surprised him.

Then Rick came back and Shane's world collapsed around him again. He had watched Carl race into his father's arms, and he saw the look of shock and guilt on Lori's face as she slowly realized her husband was, in fact, alive. He had wanted nothing more in that moment than to pull her into his arms and assure her she had done nothing wrong, but deep down he knew he would never hold her again. Not in that way.

He was alone once more.

How was that fair?

Watching Rick and his family, knowing he would never have Lori and Carl for his own, made his heart ache.

Now that Rick was back, did he even have a place in their lives anymore?

Finis.
