The Last Journey

The white here was blinding, no matter how many times he had been here. He idly wished for clothes to cover his naked body — old age didn't make him any less self-conscious in front of an ageless being — and picked up the cloak that appeared.

He recognised this cloak — he had owned it for a long time now. No sooner had he donned it on than a raspy voice called out his name, and he almost jumped.

"One would wonder if you liked being here," the voice continued, drawing closer, and finally took the shape that he recognised.

"Death," he greeted with a nod of his head. Taking in his surroundings, he noticed that this time, the mist cleared to form the place he had grew up in. Even though everything was simply white, Ignotus could almost imagine himself in the days of his childhood, running around with his two brothers.

Brothers, he thought, that had long been dead now.

A small boat remained moored at the shore a short distance away.

"Yes, that is your ride across," Death spoke, his voice piercing through the intense silence, "should you wish to go."

Closing his eyes, he remembered all the times he had been here. A tumble down the cliff in his youth; getting lost in the sea during storm; that particularly unique instance when he had been poisoned — the strongest of the people would have found themselves dead in these situations.

Yet, he had woke up each time. Bloody, battered, broken, but alive.

He smoothed out his cloak — it was this cloak that had allowed him to choose not to die, each time. Because once, when he had been very young, and his brothers had wanted power and love, he had simply asked for the ability to evade death.

He did not intend to do that today, though. Taking a deep breath, he turned to Death. "Yes, I shall cross over today."

"As you say."

Ignotus smiled and took a step forward to put his arms around his old friend. He then climb into the boat and began his last journey across the still water without and towards the white that marked the oblivion.
