Rain

Roy Mustang glanced out his window. Rain splattered on the glass in a rhythmic pattern. He sighed. He could feel a storm coming on and he wanted to leave before it hit, but Lieutenant Hawkeye wouldn't have it. In fact, she sat on the couch in his office, Black Hayate lying on the ground beside her.

"Forget it, Colonel," She said. "You're not leaving until you finish that paper work."

Roy glared at her, then at the stack of papers- the bane of his existence. He sighed again, this time out of irritation. He looked out the window again. Suddenly, a feeling of loss swept over him. Rain… Maes's funeral… Maes, his best friend. He propped his elbows on his desk and buried his face in his hands.

"Colonel? Roy? Are you okay?" His Lieutenant asked, voice filled with worry.

"I miss him, Riza." He whispered. He felt tears forming in his eyes as he remembered their days at the academy, then Maes and Gracia's wedding. He remembered seeing Elysia for the first time, then the look on her face when she realized her daddy wasn't coming back.

"I… I know, Roy. We all do."

"He didn't have to die!" Roy sobbed. "It's my fault! If only I hadn't interrupted him… It was so important…"

Black Hayate cocked his head to one side, sensing something was wrong. He stood up and trotted over to Roy's side and sat by him, whimpering while Roy wept.

Riza closed her eyes. "No one blames you." She said. "You couldn't have done anything."

Roy shook his head. "I blame me."

And with that, he stood, grabbed his coat and dashed out of the room. At least in the rain, no one could see him cry.
