If you asked her how she'd managed to become friend with two Slytherins, Hermione would have no clue what to say.
For one, she had sworn so firmly not to tell anyone about their friendship; if word somehow got back to their parents, Hermione's new Slytherin friends might as well be dead. Hermione didn't want them dead. She liked them alive, thank you very much.
However, she couldn't answer your question for more reasons than one. Often, it seemed infinite reasons—Harry and Ron might find out and abandon her; the teachers might become suspicious of such inter-house unity; she and her friends might not work out in public; they might deny ever even talking cordially to her…
But above all, Hermione couldn't tell you because it was nearly too complicated for her to understand, let alone explain. Nearly. Long story short, though, Hermione would at least think to herself about train rides and idiot redhead boys and tears and trolls and a group of seven girls nearly drowning in a lake.
Seven? you just maybe might wonder aloud if you heard her thoughts.
Yes, seven, Hermione just maybe might think with a roll of her brown eyes. There were seven girls, one of which was her, and two of which were Slytherin, and last year—first year—the seven of them became secret friends, secret friends nobody knows about. Yet.
A/N: This is a project I'm working on together with my bf, EllaLewis. We each write a chapter and then work together to make it seem as if it's written with only a single author. (Wish us luck!)
We've been wanting to do something like this ever since we realized just how similar our writing styles are... That was months ago, actually.
So! Be prepared for random, sporadic updates and long bits of time when there's no updates because if there's anything we both are, it's inconsistent (Ella's words, not mine XD). But fear not! We shall never abandon our love child! (Ella's teasing me for using this wording but I will not change it!)
