The Zip Line

I look down and swallow the bile inching up the back of my throat.

Tris must have noticed and gives my hand a reassuring squeeze as if to say, "It'll be fine."

I don't think it will be, but just to wipe the worried look off her face, I give her a half-hearted smile.

I know she can see right through it.

I only have four fears and heights just has to be one of them.

My best friend Zeke snaps me back to the moment at hand by saying, "Alright Four, time to become Three."

I give him a wary smile as he harnesses me into the contraption.

He's been trying to get me to zip-line for as long as I can remember and I'm finally doing it.

Zeke pats me reassuringly on the back and counts down from three.

Tris says the only words I need to hear and I'm flying.

I'm flying like the birds tattooed on Tris's collarbone.

I feel invincible, even though my stomach churns and my heart beats a mile a minute.

I hear a snap and I'm falling.

As I plunge towards the Earth at an unimaginable speed, I accept what's going to happen next and I'm not afraid.

I hear screaming but I block it out.

I'll see her again.

Someday.

As the ground comes closer, I close my eyes.

The last thing Tris said still ringing in my ears,

"Be brave Tobias."
