Marius POV
The shot rang out, and I saw her slight figure crumple. "EPONINE!" I shouted, racing over to her. Then I saw her stir. She was still alive, and conscious, but barely. "Come on, we have to get you to Joly" I started to lift her, but she resisted. "Marius – wait." I stopped obediently. "Marius – I – love – you." I stopped dead. She loved me. 'Ponine loved me. My heart started beating violently, making me aware of her failing one. This time she didn't resist my picking her up. I carried her into the temporary sickbay and handed her over to Joly before sitting down in the corner.
Eponine loved me. But I didn't love her – did I? No. I loved Cosette. Cosette was the one and only true love of my life. But I had only just met her, and I had known Eponine for years. I suddenly thought of all those times she had been there for me when I was ill or upset. She had always been there. Always. Even when I started seeing Cosette. She had still been there. She found Cosette for me. She had delivered messages to her. And all because of me. Perhaps- Perhaps she was the one and only true love of my life.
I went over to her. She was trembling on the blanket. "'Ponine, you have to get well again. Because – I love you too." She frowned weakly. "I am dreaming…"
"No, you're not. You're awake. And I love you."
"But – Cosette?"
"I don't really know Cosette. Not like I know you." She smiled. And suddenly sat up. "No, 'Ponine, you must lie down."
"No…" she leant up and kissed me full on the mouth. My heart went into overdrive. But it stopped suddenly when she fell back onto the bed in a faint. "Joly!" I shouted. He came running over. He started checking her. "It's alright; the bullet only went through her hand. It needs bandaging though – now." Together, we bandaged her hand and finally staunched the flow of blood. "She's going to be fine." reassured Joly.
"Thank God." I sat down next to her and held her un bandaged hand. Suddenly, the already pretty destroyed door fell off its hinges as a small blonde figure came racing into the room, dropping its gun on the floor in the process. "Gavroche?" I said in confusion. He pushed past me and knelt by Eponine. "I came quick as they told me," he gasped. "Is she gonna be alright? She's not dead, is she?" "No, no, she's going to be fine. The bullet only went through her hand. But why are you here? Do you even know her? What is she to you?" He glared at me with his hard, ice-blue eyes. "My sister."
