Speed sat down at the dining room table opposite Horatio and spread the cloth out in front of him on the table. He then laid all of his tools out on the cloth. He took his gun from its holster, removed the clip and emptied the chamber. Once he was sure that the gun was safe, he began the process of disassembling it. He placed the four major components of the weapon on the cloth.

This wasn't something he particularly enjoyed doing. He actually thought of it more as a chore, sort of like doing laundry or washing dishes. But it was something that had to be done and he knew that. He felt safer for doing it. The process was completely automatic to him by this point and he always allowed his mind to wander as he cleaned his gun.

Even though he knew how important this process was, he was a little embarrassed to admit that after David had died, he had actually stopped doing it. Later he figured that his behavior during those months after his death were due to his depression and probably an unconscious attempt at suicide. He knew he was prone to those sort of thought during seriously depressive moments.

He was thankful that Horatio had noticed his lack of attention to his weapon after he had moved in and had insisted that they sit together every Sunday evening and perform this ritual. He dipped a small brush into the cleaning solvent and began scrubbing the inside of the gun frame. Then he attached a small pad to the end of the cleaning rod and pushed it through the barrel. When he'd completed the cleaning process and his gun was dry, he oiled all of the guns moving parts then reassembled it. He pulled back the slide and dry fired the gun a couple of times to ensure it was working properly.

As he packed up his cleaning kit, his mind wandered back to that day over a year ago. The day Horatio had realized he hadn't been cleaning his gun. It had been the only real fight they'd ever had. He was glad Horatio had won out. He didn't want to think of what might have happened if he'd had to rely on his weapon during that time.

Horatio had finished before him and waited patiently for him to pack up. When he was done, Horatio picked up both kits then he leaned down and gave Speed a kiss. He smiled at him. Speed watched as he walked out of the room to go stow the kits away. Yeah, he was really glad that Horatio had won that argument.
