There was a reason Annie was always so focused on her school work. If she wasn't thinking about school, or doing something, the voices would come back. The ones that said she wasn't good enough, the ones that reminded her how lonely she really was. Annie just wanted to be loved. To feel love. She though she had felt it with her high-school boyfriend, but that was just pretend. She thought she had felt it with her mother, but that was out of obligation. Both times she was wrong.
It's that loneliness she feels that keeps her so happy in the study group and at school. If people saw how she truly felt they would lock her up. Make her even more alone, or worse, pity her. Annie couldn't handle either of those outcomes. That's also why she never cries. Even in her room. Otherwise Troy and Abed might suspect something was wrong, and she couldn't let that happen. She knows Troy has no idea what's going on in her head, but she suspects that Abed might have an inkling. She can see it in his eye. When Annie forgoes their allocated movie night every now and again, or spends too long in her room with the door closed and music playing. A glint of questioning and worry can be seen in his eye, but as soon as she smiles and asks what the boys want for dinner that disappears.
But the loneliness doesn't disappear. It follows her wherever she does. she's perfected the art of pushing it out of her mind for a few hours, but it sometimes sneaks back. It did that during study group one thursday night, and Annie had to excuse herself to use the ladies room. She walked in, locked one of the stalls, sat down and started crying. She didn't know what exactly she was crying about, it was a lot of things; her family, her ambitions, and just the fact that she was alone in the big scary world, with no-one to turn too. That's when she heard the door screech
"Annie, are you in here?"
The voice was Britta's. She must've spent too long in the bathroom. Quickly she wiped her tears and took a breath, hoping that her voice wouldn't come out shaky. "Yeah, I'm fine, I'll be just a minute."
"Oh, okay" Britta replied, her footsteps heading towards the door. "Everyone was worried is all"
As the door closed, Annie realised she wasn't alone. She was loved. Not out of obligation, or just for pretend, but really truly loved. Every singly person in Study Room F loved her for who she was.
And you know what? She loved them too.
