Chapter One: Christmas
"There aren't very many presents under the tree this year." 12-year-old Amy pouted.
"Amy! We should be thankful for what we have." Beth scolded.
"I know, it just doesn't seem the same this year." Amy said, and continued painting her toe-nails.
"Did you see the new boy at school?" Jo asked Meg.
"I heard something about him. I think he's our neighbor. Leo Lawrence or something like that. What grade is he in?" Meg asked.
"He's in 11th with me. He's in my chemistry and economics, and I think he might be in my Algebra 2." Jo told her. "I was thinking, that he would make a perfect addition to our Christmas play. You know how we're always wishing that we had a boy to play the boys rolls." Jo told them.
"You just met the boy and you're going to ask him to act? He won't do it. Boys always find those things to be too embarrassing." Meg told her realistically.
"Well they are a little embarrassing." Amy sniffed.
"Oh please! No one from school ever sees them." Jo swatted her youngest sister with a pillow.
"Yes but we video tape them, and you always tease that you'll show one of my boyfriends one day." Amy whined.
"Well when you see how handsome Leo is, you won't mind having to act in a play with him." Jo told her.
"Good. There are hardly any good boys left in the school." Amy said pointedly.
"You've grown tired of all the ones in Middle School already?" Meg asked.
"If you knew them you would say that they're terribly immature. You have heard their conversation in gym today. They're beasts!"
"I have to admit that the boys in my middle school classes were not very sensible either." Beth told them.
"Boys will be boys." Meg said, and went to go see if the cookies she had been baking were done yet.
