The mid October weather made the air cool and crisp in central park, the leaves were just beginning to change. It was one of those days were everyone went outside to enjoy the last nice weather of the year, the kind of day were dog lovers broke out the leashes and nannies dusted off the strollers.
But not everything was as pleasant as the weather in central park. On the north side of the park a young girl picked the pocket of a wealthy young business man while he talked on his cell phone, although it was more like screaming. He seemed to be yelling at the person on the other line about managing badly or something. The girl pitted the man (or women) on the phone for having to work with the business man and secretly wished they would get a promotion and never have to deal with him again.
That's right a thief is wishing the best for a random person not exactly what you would expect from a thief off the streets. But she was not your everyday ordinary thief, she was different. She reached into his pocket and felt the leather of his wallet, she had stolen dozens of paintings and hundreds of priceless jewels but something was different this time.
This time the business man felt the sudden lightness in his pocket. He turned to find the girl with the wallet in her hand.
He seemed to forget about his call as he lowered his hand and yelled, "HEY!"
She started to run as the business man began to usher over some cops walking by.
"Oh shit," She whispered under her breath as she started to run faster. Three police officers chased her down central park as she maneuvered past joggers and dogs. Her yellow converse sneakers thudded against the pavement as hard as they could as she ran for her life.
She snuck a peek behind herself and noticed them closing in she would have to get more creative. She saw an alley way in between an Asian restaurant and some designers store but to get there she would have to cross the busy street. There was no cross walk or street light to tell her it was safe to cross.
She took one more look behind her and ran across the street. A taxi skidded to a halt barely missing her and horns honked all around the girl. Once she was on the other side she let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. She didn't stop to for more than two seconds when she was running again towards the alley.
She submerged herself into the darkness between the two buildings; she paused and waited for her eyes to adjust to the darkness when she heard the police talking. She peeked out onto the street and saw that they had successfully gotten across the street.
The first officer looked around and asked, "were did she go?"
"I saw her go into the alley" the second informed.
Her eyes still hadn't adjusted but she couldn't just stand there so she started to go deeper with her hands in front of her just in case she hit a wall.
All of a sudden she found herself kicking something on the ground and falling forward luckily her hands were there to break her fall but they came away bloodied and scratched.
She looked behind her and saw that she had tripped on a homeless man sleeping on the ground…well he was sleeping until she woke him up. He was shouting angrily as the police came up and grabbed her arms.
That's when the leather wallet fell from her hands smashed and a little bloody but still intact fell to the ground, she had forgot she was even holding it. One of the officers slapped on her cuffs while another read her, her rights. And before they hauled her away she bent over and whispered to the hobo,
"You owe me big time archer." And as she looked into his dark blue eyes that seemed much younger than the face that wore them, she saw a seemingly unfamiliar face smirk at her.
