Authors note: A little one shot inspired by Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars (from the Hunger Games) and the Hunger Games (it's inspired by a specific characters death scene, I don't want to spoil anything though). Written while listening to Safe and sound. Typed while listening to Kiss the Rain. And edited while listening to Angels On The Moon.
Disclaimer: I do not own Percy Jackson nor Safe and Sound. They belong to Rick Riordan and Taylor swift, respectivly.
Safe and Sound
I slash monster after monster, each one takes me further to the end of this battle. I can make out Thalia jabbing a monster with her knife at a close distance from me. She moves further into the forest, further away from me.
The sun was setting in the distance while it continued to drizzle. An explosion of dust signals another death of a monster, my last monster.
"Yes!" I yell as I throw my arms in the air. My victory is short lived though.
"Ahh!" I hear a frightened scream. I look to wear Thalia disappeared. I start moving to her diction but stop. I hear faint screaming which gradually gets louder.
"Percy!" The voice screams. I realize it's not Thalia's voice but Nico's.
"Nico!" I shout back, letting him know he's heard.
"Percy, help!" I can here the fear in his voice. Running as fast as I can I yell to him that I'm coming.
I reach Nico but I wish I hadn't. The small son of Hades was covered in blood, his blood. Claw marks and gashes cover his face, arms and body. His face was drained of all color and his eyes were starting to close.
"Nico," I whisper with fear coating my voice like frosting. "What happened?"
"Too many…monsters," He mumbles. His eyelids attempted to close.
"No! You're okay, you'll be fine." I convince him. Neither of us believes me though. Nobody can surprise that much blood loss; it's a wonder how he survived this long. The thought of loosing this kid was unbearable.
Every breath hurt him. The bleeding has stopped and a bit of the blood has been washed away thanks to the light rain. The tears that were being stored in my eyes threatened to spill but I held them in, for his sake.
"You'll be alright," I tell him. He nods sleepily.
"Percy," He croaks, "Don't leave." I shake my head.
"I won't ever leave you," I reply. He mouths some words even though he knows I can't read lips. A couple of tears escape from Nico's eyes, He tries to close them again.
"Don't close them, Nico. You and I will make it through this, we'll be safe," I say even though we both know it's sadly lie.
"Where's Thalia?" He whispers, dazed.
"She's okay. Don't worry. You'll see her really soon."
"The monsters?" He asks.
"Dead," I reply with a sad smile. I blink back more tears. A small smile spreads across Nico's fragile face.
"Good."
"Oh gods, Nico don't die," I whisper. I couldn't hold them back any longer. My tears poured down my face like a waterfall. "Don't die," I plead through tears.
"Nico don't you dare die on me."
"Percy…" He whispers softly. He brings his finger to my mouth, telling me to stop talking. I bite me lip trying to stop more tears. A sad smile appears on his face. He's already accepted his fate.
My tears stream down my face, and I don't dare stop them. I know what comes next.
"Close your eyes," I urge him. If he's ready to accept his fate then…I should be too. He does as he's told. His eyes slowly shut which hurts even more than if they were closed quickly.
His breathing becomes less frequent. It eventually stopped but his smile remained.
"No one can hurt you now," I say in-between my sobbing, "You're safe and sound." The crying takes over. I cry for who knows how long, trying to accept the fact that this boy is gone for good. The rain got heavier as it usually does when someone dies. I kissed Nico's forehead before looking for Thalia.
