You're right there to save me

Moordryd had been a loner most of his life. As a young child his father had shut him up in the citadel with only a nurse and a tutor for company. When his father did take him on the rare outing he was not permitted to socialize with other children, not even those from Sun City. Word said that they were weak and would only serve to make him, Moordryd, weak. When Moordryd was a preteen he had only his dragon, Decepshun. As he grew older he was given his own Crew. But he was still a loner.
The he came. Cain.
It wasn't as though Cain was a piercing ray of light in Moordryd's generally bleak life. It wasn't as though Cain was suddenly Moordryd's knight in shining armor. No, Cain started out more like an irritating, sarcastic underling. But Cain worked his way up from bottom rung. By the time Moordryd was 16, Cain was Moordryd's second-in-command.
And Moordryd's best friend, despite Cain's cynical attitude and cowardice streak. Despite the fact that Cain remained an irritating, sarcastic underling, he was Moordryd's best friend nonetheless.
Cain stood beside Moordryd when facing his father, and Cain listened to Moordryd tell him about his father. Moordryd told Cain things he told no one else. And that, more than anything, qualified Cain as his best friend, if not his only friend.
Sometimes, sitting alone in his room, Moordryd would try to imagine his life without Cain, without his best friend, and the images it conjured were frightening. Moordryd saw himself very much alone.
Completely alone without his confidence, his best friend…
Moordryd became determined. If he would be alone again for the rest of his life without Cain, he would fight to keep his best friend. Moordryd would fight anyone who dared to remove Cain from his life.
Even his father.
Because when Word belittled him, when Word abandoned him, rejected him, spoke coldly to him, Moordryd found comfort in Cain's presence. Cain stood beside him through it all. And when Cain was not present Moordryd would find comfort in talking with him later.
Moordryd knew Cain had a cowardice streak. Cain even had left behind Moordryd at times, when things got rough. But it never occurred to Moordryd to leave Cain behind.
Because when it really mattered, not when rocks were falling, not when the ground was giving way, but when his father wounded him inside, Cain was there. Cain was always there.
Moordryd knew that in his whole life no one could ever replace Cain. No matter how brilliant, how beautiful or handsome, or how talented, and no matter what gender the person trying to replace Cain was, no one could ever take the place of his best friend.
After all, who else had stood beside him all this time? Who had been there to listen to him? Who had been there for him?
No one but Cain.

MB: Well, I rewrote it. Cut off a lot of the lyrics (they were drowning the actual fic) and I cut out the Slash. Memo to self: Never write slash again. Read it, just don't write it. :p
Closing Quote:
A friend is one who knows you and loves you just the same.
