I AM THE ONE

"Max," Fang called out. I blinked.

"What?" I said.

We had snuck out while the rest of the flock was sleeping, and right now we were flying low above the waters of a nearby beach. It was really nice, flying in the dark, the reflection of the stars shimmering in the water. You should really try it some time. Oh wait, maybe you can't.

"I've said your name like, eight times already," he said.

"Yeah, I just zoned out there for a while," I said, "sorry."

Fang flew close to me, and shivers were sent up my spine, just as there always did whenever we flew this close. "Max, what's wrong?" he asked.

"Nothing," I said.

"Yes, there is," Fang argued. "I know there is."

"Oh yeah? And how would you know that?" I said. "You're not Angel. You can't read my mind."

"I don't have to be able to read your mind to know something's wrong," Fang flew even closer, we were barely inches apart. "Because I am the one who has always been there, and I am the one who knows you best."

I looked into his beautiful brown eyes, knowing that this was true.

I sighed. "I've just been thinking about Mr. Chu and Brigid and the M-Geeks chasing us everywhere we go. You know, for a moment there, I actually thought we were done saving the world, until these idiots showed up. And, not to mention the fact that any one of us could wake up any morning with the date of our upcoming deaths printed on our necks!"

Fang chuckled. "Is that all? Max, you worry too much. Learn to relax a little."

"Yeah, well it's a lot to worry about!" I said. "Not to mention that-"

The rest of my words were suddenly lost as Fang kissed me. As usual, I had a quick brain shortage, but I let go of it, and kissed him back.

His arms were around my waist, pulling me close to him. My arms were knotted in his gourges, jet black hair. His lips were gentle against mine, and his mouth tasted like cinnamon gum. I loved it.

We were like that for a while, and for a moment there, I stopped worrying about everything. Right then-all that mattered was him. When we finally pulled away, I stared at his perfect face for a moment.

He is the one.

"Come on," Fang said, "we should get back to the hotel."
