My eyes opened slowly and for the first time in days I was able to sit up. Edward was beside my bed as always. The way he was sitting was the first clue to me that something was wrong. His elbows were on his knees and he was tense.
"Edward?"
"Oh Bella, I'm so sorry," he said, sitting up.
"Sorry about what? Edward, what's happened?"
"Nothing ,Darling, nothing at all."
I sensed that there was something he wasn't telling me. I did not like him keeping things from me, so I pressed for more information. "Edward, there is something wrong. What is it? Please, I don't like it when you don't tell me things."
"If I tell you, you'll be mad at me."
"Is it Jake?" I asked quietly.
"Yes," Edward muttered. He was so quiet I almost didn't hear him. No thanks to my new vampire hearing I did.
"What happened, Edward! What happened?!"
"He um, he um,……"
"Edward, is he dead?"
Edwards face told me the answer. I automatically burst into tears. I didn't get to say goodbye and we never really patched up the hole that I had made in our relationship.
Edward wrapped his arms around me. For some strange reason I didn't feel comforted by him. I pulled his arms off and sat in silence. He got the message that I wanted to be alone and left the room.
Thoughts poured into my head about Jacob and I tried to block them. For now I knew that he was gone and that was enough. I didn't even care how. And I realized all I could do was sit there and cry for a boy I once loved.
