Keeping a Peace of Mind
A/N: Super short. Just a musing really
The silence between the moments was the hardest part. The interminable seconds between life and death. Although they'd never know, never recognize it, they weren't the only ones who held their breath until someone spoke those magical words, "All clear."
There was a lot to be said for Team One. Winnie had listened to Greg Parker's sure, insistent voice coaching his team through each call. His hand was at their backs, he always said. Sometimes she could feel the firmness of his touch when he spoke. Ed was the team leader. He ran into the fray when others would've run. Jules was a calming force, a mother even before she knew she was going to give birth. Sam was brash but she'd heard as he'd talked down that soldier in the hockey stadium. He was a soldier but being on Team One had made him more than that. And Spike. Winnie would be lying if she said she didn't feel anything for him. She'd been there listening when he lost Lew. When he howled, the anguish he'd felt resonated through her headset.
So even if they didn't know, she knew. She wasn't a part of Team One but she'd been on every ride and call. Winnie was there for every moment. She might not be running down bad guys or holding a gun to anyone's face but she kept the peace. And she tried to keep her peace of mind even though the voices in her head had names and faces and families.
