Disclaimer: Not mine (if they were, we'd have a lot more of Caroline walking about in heels).

AN: Just a short bit of un-beta-ed fluff as I waited in line for my Philz Coffee this morning (it was a long line :). Figured some fluff was in order to help us through the spoilers for S.2

Summary: A quiet moment at home for Caroline and Kate in the madness of Series 2. Set after s2e2.

.

.

"Do you hear that?" Caroline asks, cocking her head to one side, trying to pick out the music she swore she heard from the rest of the house's cacophony.

"Hear what?" Kate responds, pausing as she wipes down the counters after yet another awkward dinner. She can't hear anything past the thoughts racing in her head - thoughts about Caroline and her kids and potentially their kids and what if it didn't work and what if it did and what if -

"That music..." Caroline turns off the water and stops washing the dishes. She dries her hands on a tea towel as she to locate the source, it couldn't be from upstairs, it wasn't the boy's style anyways.

.

She follows it to the glass doors leading out back.

.

She listened as she watches Kate's reflection.

.

This moment, with this woman, in this house, just seemed so...right. "Kate..." Caroline calls, "Dance with me?"

"What?" The younger woman laughs, putting down the wash cloth.

"Dance with me? Please?" Caroline asks, quite seriously.

"But I can't hear the music." Kate smiles as she makes her way over to her lover.

"How about now?" The blonde asks as she opens the glass doors that lead out to the dusky backyard.

"Is that coming from Celia and Alan's?" Kate asks as she wraps her arms around the other woman.

"Think so..." Caroline turns in Kate's embrace and asks once more. "Dance with me?"

.

They both pause for a moment, trying to read each other's eyes. They are on the verge of something - all this talk about babies and houses and the rest of their lives - as much as they ignored it, every day it grew a little closer, encroached a little more on the precious moments they were able to carve out of their day for one another, for moments as small as this. "All of a sudden Caroline, I'm very sad." Kate whispers.

"Not tonight. No reason to be sad tonight." Caroline responds softly, leaning her head on the other woman's shoulder as they begin to sway to the music.

"But we will be, won't we?" Kate asks, pressing a small kiss on the other woman's forehead. She forgets, because Caroline is so imposing, so grand, that without her heels, without her suits and her bravado, she's actually shorter than her.

"Kate -" Caroline pulls back to look at the younger woman. "I have waited my whole life for someone as wonderful, as beautiful, as understanding, as loving and as brilliant as you. I'm afraid it's your bad luck now that I've got you, I'm not giving you back." She grins, trying to lighten the moment. It seems their entire relationship has just a series of dramatic life choices now - she wasn't going to squander a moment as precious as this. She curls herself back against Kate's body, letting herself soak up every ounce of warmth and comfort and even love. It would be gone soon. Sooner than she'd like, and she'd be left alone. But for now she would...

.

"Are you singing to me?" Kate asks, her thoughts being interrupted by Caroline's gentle voice ringing in her ear and settling in her heart. "You're the singer in this family dear" Caroline teases before she goes back to humming along to the music drifting in the wind.
