Sneaking out to be together had been their area of expertise since they'd first fallen for each other. It wasn't ever anything that had to be tuned to perfection; it came almost naturally, for lack of a better word. Tonight, they were the only two people out in the wide, grassy fields in front of Balamb Garden. They knew they couldn't get in trouble, even if someone did find them, because he'd dropped any notion of ever again taking classes, and she wasn't even a student.

"You know," he said suddenly, his voice sending vibrations against the back of her head, "I never woulda thought in a million years you'd come back to me."

She smiled and pressed back against his chest more. "And I never would've thought you'd be so pessimistic."

He laughed as he squeezed her a little. "Well, when you're constantly fuckin' up and end up giving people who didn't like you a whole lot to begin with more of a reason to hate you, you kinda tend to get that way."

"I liked you."

"Figures." He grinned, looking out across the landscape.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Nothin' bad. Just mean you're so... forgiving."

They were both quiet for a few moments after that. Then she turned her head and let it fall back, so that she was looking at him now. And, with another smile, she said simply, "I just never lost faith."

AN: I'm currently in the process of moving several of my stories from my personal writing journal on LiveJournal (607am) to here. I'm keeping them at the aforementioned journal, though ... just putting them on here as well. :)
