"What's today's date?" Rachel asks the girl next to her, brightly. Too brightly for this early in the morning.
The emo chick looks at her like she's crazy. "November 10, 2011" Liza says in a dry tone before turning back to her locker and applying her dark red lipstick.
Rachel crosses out the ninth on her calendar and pulls her books for homeroom, first and second period from her locker. Homeroom and Spanish with Mr. Schue and Finn, Tina, Kurt and Brittany. Second period she has a free period along with the rest of Glee. They meet in the choir room on most days. There they usually end up playing with different harmonies and melodies while Puck messes with his guitar and Brittany rushes to copy Santana's homework.
On this particular day, the fourth and last November 10 of Rachel Berry's high school career, she decides to spend the twenty minutes before homeroom starts in the choir room. She's done it before but usually she goes to the auditorium because it's empty and she can practice. Today she decides to switch it up.
As she approaches, she hears people running scales. It sounds like Quinn and Mercedes, possibly Tina. Mercedes is laughing too hard and she drops out as Rachel enters the room. Tina, Quinn, Mercedes, Santana, Mike and Kurt are grouped around the piano. They're laughing and Quinn drops out soon as she doubles over laughing. That's when Rachel realizes it's Kurt singing. Tina would have dropped out two notes ago had she been singing.
Kurt's voice goes higher and higher. D. E flat. E.
F. The High F.
Kurt stops singing but Rachel barely notices his laughter because her mind is replaying that last note over and over and over again.
She strides forward and taps him on the shoulder. He turns around and stares at her, mouth open, not quite sure what's going on.
"You can hit the high F," she states plainly.
Kurt nods.
"You could hit the high F two years ago." Two years. It really is two years this week since their first Diva Off.
Kurt nods again but the apprehensive breath Kurt takes before he nods tells Rachel everything she needs to know.
That he threw the competition and her win is a sham. For some reason, this makes her feel like her entire high school life is a sham.
"Rachel-"
"Don't. You're going to sing Defying Gravity at Regionals. Start us off with a bang."
"Rachel-"
"No" she says strongly as a tear falls from her eye. "You're going to sing Defying Gravity and you will sound ten times better than anyone else has ever sounded singing that song."
Rachel turns, crying more freely now. She leaves but when she hears Kurt start to sing she stands in the door, her back to him.
"I've heard it said, that people come into our lives for a reason, bringing something we must learn."
