AN: I was going to make this longer and show them picking out a dog but then it ended and I thought it was a good place to wrap everything up so here you go. Hope you like it, reviews are welcome.
She's leaning against the wall as he comes out of the locker room, her foot propped up behind her and looking suspiciously casual.
"Ready to get out of here?" McNally asks, dangling the keys to the truck from her finger. "I'm driving."
"I'm not even allowed to drive on my birthday?" he pretends to be offended as they begin walking towards the parking lot, matching each other in step.
"You can't drive if you don't know where you're going," she quips, her eyes full of mirth.
Sam hesitates, confused for a moment until he understands what she is saying.
"McNally, you know I don't like surprises," he sighs as he begins to move again.
"I know, I know, but you'll love this one, I promise!" Andy insists. She grins and leans up to kiss his cheek as he holds the station doors open for her.
Sam shakes his head and smiles back at her. He still isn't sure he would like whatever she has planned, but he is willing to be a good sport about it if it makes her happy. And from what he could tell, she is- his girlfriend is practically skipping to the truck. She hops in the driver's side and starts the engine. Sam quickly follows her example and slides into the passenger's seat; she's so eager to hit the road she might leave him behind if he dawdles around.
"So where are we going?" he inquires casually, trying to get more information out of her.
"Sam, if I tell you then it wouldn't be a surprise. You do know how this works, right? You're lucky you're not blindfolded right now."
"Oh, I'd be happy to be blindfolded by you McNally." He waggles his eyebrows suggestively, which only makes her snort out a laugh.
They are silent for the rest of the drive, Andy focusing on the road ahead and Sam shamelessly studying the woman beside him, his mouth turning upwards at the corners.
She was pulling into a parking lot 10 minutes later when he finally tears his gaze away and sees where they are.
DOWNTOWN TORONTO DOG POUND, the sign reads in large bold letters.
His jaw drops. "We're getting a dog?" he asks, turning to face her. She's nearly bouncing in her seat, eyes wide and with a huge grin across her face.
"Well, I mean we don't have to, but I thought you'd like the idea and I considered going to a breeder but these dogs need a home, Sam, and they're just as friendly as expensive purebreds-" She babbles on as a memory forms in his mind.
"I'll take out the trash, I'll walk your dog," Sam pleaded, trying to think of anything else she could want. He'd give her anything.
She huffs out a breath. "I don't have a dog," she mutters, shaking her head and looking down at her shuffling feet.
"Then let's get one, a labradoodle, a mutt from the pound, I don't care. Let's name it Boo, Boo Radley. I've always loved that name for a dog." He can hear the desperation starting to inflect his voice. His hands shake with sincerity.
Sudden silence brings him back to the present. Andy's finished her speech and is waiting for him to voice his opinion, now looking unsure. She opens her mouth to say something, but he beats her to it.
"Yes," he breathes, and she smiles again. He knows this is about more than just getting a pet. This is a promise, a commitment. A step forward in the life they're building together. "Yes," he says, boldly now as he envisions their life with a dog- their dog- added to the mix of craziness and happiness and genuine love that surrounds them. "Let's get a dog, Andy."
She beams and pulls him in for a long kiss. When they break apart they pause, their faces still close. "Maybe this surprise isn't so bad," he admits quietly. They grin at each other because they both know he absolutely loves it.
"Happy birthday, Sam."
