~ For Lauren ~

Lavender let out another huff as she flopped down onto her springy mattress, a groan escaped from her lips as she rested her hands over her eyes. She heard the soft snickering of her best friend, Parvati Patil, and she shot a quick glare over in her direction. That only proved to increase the intensity of the other girl's laughter. The Yule season was quickly arriving at Hogwarts, and Lavender was still without a date. It wasn't that no one had asked her - plenty of boys had attempted asking her to the ball, the problem was that she didn't want to go with them.

She'd tried thinking about which boys she would want to go with, but her mind didn't bring her to any boys she knew. Parvati was in a similar boat, Lavender knew that much, though perhaps it was the opposite. Parvati was more studious and tried not to be too social, as opposed to her sister who loved any and all attention. Lavender's bed dipped next to her, and she turned her gaze towards where she knew Parvati layed.

"What are we gonna do?" mumbled Lavender as she turned over onto her stomach to face Parvati. She watched the girl's mouth turn up at the corners, watched as her eyes softened and she let out a soft chuckle.

"I don't know Lav, I don't know," it came off more joking than Lavender had expected, it seemed to her like Parvati didn't quite care - that or she'd had it all figured out. It wasn't that they weren't ready, in a way, it was more so that they didn't have anyone to go with. They already had dresses picked out, lovely, elegant, absolutely stunning dresses that were sure to shock everyone when they walked in. Or that's what they liked to think anyways - the only issue was that they didn't have dates.

"What if we went with each other?" came Parvati's hesitant question, as if it wouldn't go over well. Lavender mulled it over in silence for a moment, unsure of how to feel at first. After a beat of hesitation she turned more towards the girl in front of her.

"Are you asking me to go with you?"

"Only if you want me to be,"

"I'd love that," Lavender finally said with a smile. She realized then that perhaps the reason she didn't want to go with any of the boys was because there was a girl she'd been wanting to go with the whole time. The two of them flushed crimson for a moment, silence enveloping their shared dorm room - a silence that was quickly broken by Hermione Granger bursting into their room with exciting news.

They sat on the same bed all night, listening to the bushy haired girl ramble on and on. But they couldn't stop glancing at each other, couldn't help smiling absently at the other and then flushing crimson when they got caught. It was good fun, and they were sure that this Yule season would be the happiest they'd had in all of their years at Hogwarts. Though whether that was because of the Ball or each other was anyone's guess. Lavender flushed pink at a thought that entered her mind as they talked about christmas decoration that were sure to be hanging at the ball. Her mind brought to one she'd not thought about before.

What would they do about the mistletoe?
