Child's Toy Challenge

Fleur watched, hidden in the doorway, as her four-year-old daughter, Victoire, played with a muggle puzzle her granddad Artie got her for Christmas four months ago.

Victoire's eyebrows furrowed in concentration as she tried to get all the sides of the colored cube the same shade. When her granddad gave her the "rubrix cube", he told her that only the smartest of people, muggle or not, can solve it. Ever since then, Fleur's bright little girl has been trying to get all six sides of the cube the same color. She has four sides done, she just lacks two sides.

As Fleur watched, she was unaware of the person sneaking up on her.

"Hey," her husband, Bill, said.

Fleur just smiled in acknowledgement and continued to stare at her daughter.

Bill rested his cheek on her shoulder and wrapped his arms around her growing stomach. "Not long, babe, until our newest little girl will be here, learning how to solve that puzzle from her big sister."

"She will learn from the best, " Fleur whispered, using her near perfect English.

Looking up from her toy, Victoire smiled at her parents and whispered, "Look, mummy, I finished it."

Eyes watering at her daughters first real accomplishment, Fleur said, "Good job, sweetie, tomorrow we will go show granddad. He will be proud of you."

Beaming at this, Victoire said to her father, "Daddy, will you read me a story?"

"I sure will, sweetie."

Pulling a book off of the child's shelf, Bill nestled into bed with his daughter, and began reading.

Nearing the end of the story, an exhausted Victoire said, "Mummy, when will Chastity get here?"

"Just a few more weeks, sweetheart."

"Good. I'm excited," was the last thing she said before she drifted off into a deep sleep for the night.

"I am too, Tory," her mother whispered, and kissed her forehead.

After tucking his daughter in, Bill took his wife delicately by the hand, and led her to the patio where they lay all night, in a loving, comfortable embrace.
