Dwight woke up in a cold sweat, panting and huffing, his hands shaking. It was just a nightmare, but for Dwight Houston, nothing was ever JUST a nightmare. It was a demonic presence. And in this nightmare caused by Demons, he was sure the worst had happened.
The demons have got Jay.
Panicked, Dwight grabbed his cell phone and dialed Jay. It rang…
And rang…
And rang…
"Hey, you've reached Jay, I can't come to the hone right now…" Dwight growled and tried again.
"Come on Jay, answer the phone," Dwight whispered.
"Hey, you've reached Jay…"
"Damnit!" Dwight hung up his phone. He was now convinced the Demons had gotten to her somehow. He ran through a list in his head. Did he do the salt rings correctly? Use the right incantations to protect her? She had enough Holy Water didn't she?
Dwight leapt out of bed in his very Dwight manner and grabbed his necessary materials as she ran out the door, driving above the speed limit all the way to Jay's place.
He rushed up the stairs, his crossbow in hand, all the way to Jay's door. "Jay!" Dwight called as he banged on the door. Crossbow in one hand and holy water at the ready on his hip, Dwight burst through the door.
He saw no Demonic presence. And though still jittery, he sensed no evil. The salt lines he had put on her floor were undisturbed.
But then where was Jay?
Her blanket fort was in the corner of the room and Dwight approached it cautiously. Peeking inside, Dwight sighed a breath of relief.
Jay was fast asleep, covered in blankets.
Of course, still worried that demons would infect her sleep like they did his, Dwight shook her awake.
"Ugh…." Jay groaned. "Five more minutes."
"Jay wake up!"
"Dwight?"
"Did they get you too?"
"Who?" Jay sat up and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes.
"The demons?" Dwight asked. "I was asleep and they got to me, Jay. I saw them attack you and I...I couldn't stop them, there were too many!"
"Dwight," Jay hugged her friend close. "It's okay. I'm alright."
"I can see that, but still…" Jay grinned and hugged him tighter. "I'd like to stay, keep an eye out in case they come back."
"Stay here?"
"To protect you," Dwight explained. Jay smiled and impulsively, kissed Dwight on the cheek.
"If you want to," Jay said. She settled back into her fort and handed some extra blankets to Dwight. Then from a bowl near where she lay, she offered him a handful of candy. "Skittles?" Dwight nodded and took some.
"Goodnight Dwight," Jay smiled. "Thank you for looking out for me."
"Goodnight Jay," Dwight smiled. "And I always will."
