Samus Aran was her neighbor and because of her paranoia and acute hearing she was able to hear the brunette sing a song every morning.
Unnecessary noise annoyed her greatly, especially early in the mornings, but because the princess sang so melodically and because she, for some reason, wished her no ill she never demanded that the royal quiet down.
Once Samus learned that the princess did this every morning, once in a while alternating songs, she arose at the exact same time she always did; 6 am sharp, and kept an ear close to her door in anticipation for the Song of the Day. Samus would never admit it aloud, but the princess' voice soothed her troubled mind.
For the last month, Zelda had been singing that particular song, and by now Samus could recite it in her sleep. She understood why the princess liked the song so much, due to the honesty in the lyrics. "The way a fool would do madly."
"That's certainly true," Samus thought with a smirk. People who fell in love were, without a doubt, fools. Why would they put so much on the line and hope they receive in return better than what they gave? It was to give your heart and receive your other half, or it was to give your heart and have it shattered. All up to chance.
She sighed and removed her ear from the door. She stood and thought for a moment. Because she wasn't particularly fond of interacting with others, she usually counted a minimum of five minutes, which would be enough time for the princess to be situated in the cafeteria and for her to get out of her room and eat, far away from Zelda of course.
She hated to admit it but when she wasn't hostile towards an individual, she was shy, and she was definitely shy around Zelda. The few times they were near one another Zelda would give a polite wave and greet her warmly and Samus would merely give her an awkward smile.
Her stomach rumbled and she groaned. It should be enough time. She threw her door open in true Samus style and marched down the hall only to freeze halfway when she saw Zelda standing in front of the large window, still singing softly and looking towards the meticulously done garden below. Zelda turned around.
"Hello, Samus." She said brightly, her form almost glowing in the morning light. She was in a simple light yellow dress and her hair was loose, she still wore her boots though. Samus had a feeling the princess was extremely fond of the foot wear.
"Hello... princess." Samus said stiffly. She was unsure if she was allowed the honor of calling her by her first name. "Wait, honor?"
Zelda waved her hand dismissively.
"No need for formalities, you may call me Zelda." Well there was her answer.
Samus felt extremely relieved. "Relieved?"
"Apologies, Zelda."
Zelda giggled sweetly behind her hand. "No need for apologies either. Were you going to have breakfast?"
Samus nodded.
Zelda hummed and looked adorably shy. "May I accompany you?"
Samus' eyes widened and without her consent, her head gave a nod. She felt dread course through her as she cursed her head. She was going to make a fool of herself, and Zelda would surely cease to speak to her. "But why do I care if she speaks to me?"
Zelda beamed at the huntress. "Thank you, Samus. I hope we may become friends." With that, Zelda began to walk downstairs whilst humming the same song and Samus instinctively followed, unconsciously mouthing the words.
"Perhaps it is because she is the only one willing to."
~Short and sweet.
