This is something I wrote at least a year ago (maybe even more) and recently found. It was inspired by a line in "Round Here" by Counting Crows ("she walks along the edge of where the ocean meets the land..."). So, I decided to type it up and post it. I haven't changed it from the original, except for a grammar issue or two. Let me know what you guys think!

I remember the first time I saw her.

Although we were in the same house, and shared all the same classes, I did not see her until December of our first year. Back then she was just a small, timid muggle-born, unsure of herself and her new surroundings. She was quiet in class, and almost always tucked away safely in a corner of the common room, so it was easy not to notice her.

On that day, it was impossible not to notice her.

I was exploring the grounds on my own. Sirius was in detention, though I don't remember why. The sky was completely gray, the way it is before it snows. And there she was.

No one could have missed that red hair, especially when the rest of the scenery was so bleak and colorless. She was down at the edge of the lake, and my feet carried me in that direction. Normally I would have left her alone, but something drew me closer. Upon closer inspection, I saw she was walking along the very edge of the water. She reminded me of the person at the circus who walks on a tightrope. She was extremely concentrated, and she didn't seem to have noticed me at all. If she did, she made no movement to indicate as much.

I'm not sure how long I stood there watching her. It may have been seconds. It may have been hours. But I watched her all the same, although I never could figure out why.

Eventually, I did manage to find my voice. "What are you doing?" I asked her.

She didn't miss a beat. "Nothing," she answered, never looking up, never pausing. "Just walking."

Finally she stopped her balancing act and looked up at me with a small smile. However, it was not her smile I noticed. It was her eyes.

In front of me were the most dazzling eyes I'd ever seen in my life. They were a brilliant shade of green, gleaming with joy, and perfectly almond shaped.

"My name is Lily Evans," she said, and with that I was determined to know everything else about her. I wanted to know her inside and out. I wanted to uncover every secret locked behind those incredible green eyes.

"I'm James Potter."
