What The Heart Desires
"Have you ever wondered how your latest fiancée came to be shanghaied into Davy's crew? Hmm…"
With a disgusted sneer, the man whom I had known most of my formative years and had once been engaged to, sauntered away a bit more sober and steady than last night.
What does he know? I scowled at Norrington's retreating figure, folding my arms and trying to ignore the seeds of doubt that I had thus far kept in check.
Jack is a pirate…and he's known for using people to save his own hide. Look at the last time we had an 'adventure' together. Think of Will…
Yes, think of Will, another voice piped up. Will who purposely left to find Jack, knowing who and what he would be getting into.
Leaning against the ship's railing, I found myself fingering the broken compass. Jack said it would show the holder whatever their heart desired, huh? While a pirate, Jack often did tell the truth…in some form or another when it suited his own interests and not always at once. But while he was an opportunistic scallywag, he was the most honest scallywag I'd ever met. And I'd met quite a few.
What did I really want right now? Well, before James Norrington had given me the thought, I'd wanted to find Will. But if it were as rumored, Will would be with Davy Jones on his ship, right? So it wouldn't be all that bad to ask something further would it?
Closing my eyes, I cleared all thoughts out of my head and centered in on what I most desired to know at that moment.
Who got Will into trouble with Davy Jones?
I opened my eyes at the same time I flipped the compass open. The little ball and arrow spun around several fast revolutions, before settling with startling resolution in one direction.
Following where the arrow unwaveringly pointed, my eyes looked up to see where the object of my heart's desire of that moment had led.
The arrow landed and was pointing squarely to Jack Sparrow.
That man was standing on the high deck, a little way away from anyone else, almost standing in a pose. It was as if he were waiting for someone to come by and capture him with a canvas and oil.
Jack Sparrow…the cause of all my problems. The reason Will and I were not happily enjoying being man and wife. The reason my beloved and I had death warrants hanging over our heads back home in Port Royal and Cutler Beckett on our tails. The reason we had to rush off and rescue Will from this Davy Jones character.
Snapping the compass shut I stood up straight, eyes narrowed. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, or hurt, or betrayed, but I was. The tears pricked at the backs of my eyes but my steadily mounting anger pushed them back.
Captain Jack Sparrow had messed with the life of the wrong woman and her fiancée.
Handy little thing this compass of Jack's.
Whatever the heart desired.
